The Age of Individualism


I speak as a citizen of the Unites States of America, where individual freedom, the rights of theindividual, is enshrined in the Constitution. I look at Europe and our Great Country and fear for Our future. Mass movements, social movements, begin on a high ideal, on ideals of social justice, but they are most often submerge the individual, and thus the voice of common morality.


Common morality, that which is taught to our youth at an early age; usually in a religious setting and sponsored by (in modern Western Society) the rules and regulations known as Abrahamic religions. They are one of the three major divisions in comparative religion, along with Indian religions (Dharmic) and East Asian religions (Taoic). All these follow basic moral principles necessary for a successful Civilization and ability of Man to living amongst Men.

Introduction to the Great Book of the Western World


As I begin my reading of these Great Books of the Western world, I am following the 10 volume guide. This guide does not take one volume by volume, but rather attempts to focus on principles and discussions much as Socrates did in Ancient Athens (about 339 B.C.).


As I have been evolving as I age and have become more outspoken, I am becoming, even at this late stage more politically active and outspoken. As my business interests wane, partially due to my inability to convince companies to retain my services (do I truly threaten them with my expertise?) I have more time to devote to study and family.


Maybe is is just timing or fate, but as I have become more politically outspoken it is probably right that the guides begin with Socrates and ...

 Reading the Great Books of the Western World

If any of my old and dear friends read this they may be surprised.  

When I was beginning college back in the late 1960's I invested/purchase 'The Great Books of the Western World'.  It was an indexed/integrated set of books featuring the greatest written works of the Western Civilization.  My original thought that they would be wonderful to help me with my college work and they were a bit.  Unfortunately, few of my classes referenced these works and I don't believe my professors had even heard of many of the authors; much less read them.

This collection of 517 classics in 60 beautifully bound volumes is color-coded into four subject categories: literature, history, philosophy, and science. And since this edition includes works from 20th century authors, it’s the most up-to-date collection of the Great Books ever.
